Summer’s almost over, kids are already back in school, and a lot of people are ready for the cooler weather that comes with the changing of the season. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start thinking about next year, though: if you take the time now to install something like a retractable awning in Wellington, you’ll be able to relax in the shade next summer.
Today, we wanted to share some of the things that people can add to their homes to stay cool during the hot Florida summers.
Retractable Awnings
Retractable awnings are one of the best ways to get shade on your patio. You can choose how much shade you want, depending on the size of the awning. Along with providing shade for your outdoor space, it can also prevent sun from getting in your home and increasing HVAC costs.
You’ll also have the choice to put it up and take it down as often as you want. This is essential in a state like Florida, where hurricanes could decimate awnings that stay our year-round.
Pool
If you can’t get shade, the next best thing is to hop in the pool! Pools are an excellent way to cool off, since they can significantly reduce your body temperature. If homeowners get a pool, it’s often the centerpiece of their outdoor patio design.
This is both because pools can draw the eye and because they’re popular with homeowners and guests. You’ll want to weigh the advantages of a pool with how much space you have on your property, since they reduce the amount of space available for guests to sit, eat, and relax.
Trees
Trees are another excellent source of shade, and they can also very easily beautify a property. If you want to plant one or more trees in your backyard, we recommend speaking with patio specialists.
It’s important to consider trees as a part of your overall design because of the way they can impact other elements of your patio. For instance, if they drop leaves regularly, you may not want them near your pool. You’ll also want to consider how the shade they give changes location throughout days and seasons.
Porcelain Flooring
Along with keeping cool in the shade or in the water, it’s also useful to consider what flooring will keep your feet cool. When it’s out in the sun all day, many types of flooring can get hot. There are two considerations you want to make to determine the right type of flooring for this situation:
Material - Certain types of flooring are going to absorb heat less than others. We recommend porcelain, which doesn’t absorb heat nearly as much as, say, concrete.
Color – Along with finding a material that reflects heat, you also want to find a color. The lighter your tile, the less likely it is to retain heat.
